At Leone Rock Metals, a disturbing trend has emerged where local workers are being treated akin to slaves while Chinese and
other foreign employees enjoy luxurious conditions. The situation has drawn comparisons to the era of colonialism and the Atlantic Slave Trade, highlighting the lack of freedoms and human rights for the Sierra Leonean workforce. Our investigation has revealed the dire circumstances faced by local employees at the hands of the company.
Sierra Leonean workers endure deplorable conditions of service, receiving meager salaries and benefits in stark contrast to the favorable treatment enjoyed by their foreign counterparts. Furthermore, Sierra Leonean employees are deprived of freedom and autonomy within the company, with Chinese nationals overseeing virtually all positions across various departments.
Even roles such as Public Relations Officer, which could be effectively filled by Sierra Leoneans, are closely managed by Chinese nationals, resulting in mistreatment and disregard for the local workforce. Additionally, the company obstructs the formation of a Mines and Workers Union, preventing employees from advocating for improved working conditions.
Leone Rock Metals’ actions blatantly violate Sierra Leone’s labor laws, which prohibit the preferential employment of foreign nationals over citizens. Despite these transgressions, authorities have turned a blind eye, potentially influenced by illicit incentives from the company. In response to the allegations, Leone Rock’s management adamantly denied any wrongdoing during a recent meeting with journalists, dismissing the claims as baseless and lacking credibility.
As investigations into the matter continue, the plight of Sierra Leonean workers at Leone Rock Metals underscores the urgent need for accountability and reform within the company.
