Personnel of the Sierra Leone Police and members of the public have called on the Anti-Corruption and the Government of Sierra Leone to institute a speedy investigation on the operations of Saad Group, a rice importer and supplier whose ‘Champion Rice’ has been discovered to be unfit for human consumption and thus putting the lives of citizens at great danger.
The said rice is being supplied to the Sierra Leone Police by Saad Group but rejected because of its hazardous contents.
Even scarier is the fact that the said rice, despite having found to be hazardous for human consumption, is now being repackaged by Saad Group and resold to the public at a cheaper cost for public consumption.
As I put this piece together, the Champion Rice is presently stored in thousands at Saad Group’s stores in Hastings and Waterloo waiting to be repackaged and sold out to the public.
Such action of Saad Group to repackage and sold out to the public a certain breed of rice already discovered to be hazardous for human consumption is considered to be the highest show of wickedness which must not be left unpunished.
It could be recalled that this is not the first time Saad Group is involve in such act. Late last year, the same company imported another breed of rice which the State House Intelligence Unit discovered to be only fit for pigs.
When queried by this writer and other journalists, officials of the company said they had already bribed concerned authorities for the matter to be swept under the carpet.
Many are of the view that the company is using the same approach to get their way out of this other mess even though it is at the expense of citizens’ lives.
It is therefore not surprising that one of the senior officials of the company was so boastful when this writer contacted him to respond to the allegations surrounding the Champion Rice. The official only told me that the company is not the one responsible to supply rice to the Sierra Leone Police but did not deny the fact that they are the ones importing the rice in the country.
